Toxic Owasco Lake algae infiltrates public water supply

Cayuga County made New York state history in 2016, but it wasn't in a good way.

In a story that directly affected more than half of the county's population, news broke on Saturday, Sept. 24, that treated water at the filtration plants for the city of Auburn and town of Owasco had tested positive for blue-green algae toxins. Blue-green algae blooms had been confirmed in the plants' source, Owasco Lake, for weeks, but until this point the treatment process was keeping detectable levels of toxins out.
