Vanport water investigation to begin within two weeks

VANPORT TWP. — Contractors will begin investigating the presence of tainted water near the township’s water supply later this month.

State Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Lauren Fraley said Monday that Warrendale-based EnviroTrac Limited will begin work within the next two weeks to conduct an initial site investigation to form a remediation plan.

In February 2017, DEP representatives held a public hearing to inform Vanport Township residents about how the agency would respond to elevated levels of an industrial solvent called tricholoroethylene. The chemical was first found in 1988 in test wells about 1,500 feet from Vanport’s drinking supply, in the area behind the Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe and McDonald’s.
